BACKGROUND

AUGUSCO TO RELEASE GOLDEN JUBILEE TRAGEDY MOVIE IN HONOUR OF VICTIMS St. Augustine’s College, is set to release a movie based on the tragic events that occurred on December 5, 1980, in Cape Coast. The movie, with the working title, "The Day the Music Stopped," revolves around the untimely deaths of two Augusco students, Peter Ankamah and Emmaunel Sam (aka Awichiway), who were killed when a driver intentionally drove into a procession of students near the Cape Coast Central Hospital.

Numerous other students were injured, some severely, and unfortunately, some never fully recovered from the incident. The movie script is written by Raymond Tuvi (APSU '89), and the acclaimed filmmaker Ambrose Bubi Cooke, who is offering a pro bono service in directing the movie. The purpose of creating this movie is to commemorate the St. Augustine's College Road Tragedy and honour the victims. Despite previous efforts to have the college erect a physical monument in memory of the victims, these attempts were unsuccessful. However, on the 40th anniversary of the tragedy in December 2020, an online memorial was held, followed by another memorial in December 2021.

The positive response received, particularly from former students who were unaware of this dark chapter in the school's history, led to the decision to create an electronic "monument" in the form of a movie. This movie aims to achieve a similar impact as a physical monument but on a larger scale. A project sub-committee of APSU-USA has assembled a pre-production team, including a screenwriter, to work on "The Day the Music Stopped," which is currently in progress.
